Description
Royal Doulton Tyg Mug
This mug, with three handles, is known as a tyg. The suggestion for their use is that it could be a cup that is used by several drinkers, all of whom could identify the section of the mug that they were drinking from.
This example was made by Royal Doulton at some point between 1922-27. The backstamp on the underside of the mug was only used for that specific period. There are various other marks also impressed to the underside – UBW, B and 2897 – these are pattern and reference numbers which may identify the specific decorator of the mug, 2897 might identify the mug as being specifically from 1927. The mug has a two colour glaze, a tan colour on the bottom and a treacle coloured glaze on the upper section. The cream decorative elements are sprigs, applied to the body of the mug.
There are a few firing cracks where the base of the handles join the body of the mug but it is otherwise in good condition. Would make a handsome pen pot, or vessel for storing kitchen utensils.
