Pair of Staffordshire Spaniels
This pair of flatback Staffordhire spaniels were probably made in the last part of the 19th Century. They would have sat on a surface such as a mantelpiece placed symmetrically and looking out over the room. They are referred to as flatback pieces because the rear of them is largely undecorated as this would not have been seen from the room.
This pair are in good condition although there is a crack to the base of one of the dogs which appears to be a firing crack, ie occurred during the process of firing the piece, rather than as a result of an accident. Firing cracks are stronger than cracks that result from an accident. There is a slight loss of gilt detailing, particularly to one of the hounds.
