Description
Copper Lustre and Blue Jugs
There’s a distinct type of Welsh pottery that is known as Gaudy Ware; gaudy by name and gaudy by nature. Much Gaudy Ware has the same shiny copper lustre decoration that also makes up a large component of the decoration of these jugs. Interspersed with the copper decoration is a knock off attempt at a version of Wedgwood’s decorative style on their jasperware.
While Wedgwood mastery of this technique resulted in highly detailed scenes this moulded version loses something in translation but also gains a charm because of that. The blue glaze is again, shall we say, inspired by Wedgwood jasperware but glossy and actually a deeper shade of blue.
Both jugs are in good condition with no cracks but the white decoration on both pieces has been knocked in places as can be seen in the images.
