Copeland Indian Tree Plate with Lustre Decoration
This handsome mid size plate was made by Copeland between 1850 and 1867. The pattern on the dish is a combination of transfer ware with handpainted elements on top of the transfer. The green and bluey green colours appear to have been painted freestyle. The design borrows elements from Chinese patterns (or Western interpretations of Chinese patterns!) but is actually referred to as Indian Tree. With bamboo foliage and blooms that resemble chrysanthemum. The overglaze to the banded pattern on the external ind internal rims of the plate have a lustre metallic shine to them.
Copeland were based in Stoke on Trent and worked in partnership with Spode.
