Description
Cheslyn Hay Auction Poster – 1938
This poster dates from 1938 and was made as publicity for the auction of seven lots all of them property and land in Cheslyn Hay, a former mining village in Staffordshire.
The auction took place at The Colliers’ Arms Hotel in Cheslyn Hay at 7pm on February 23rd 1938. The graphic decisions taken in the design of posters such as this one are always intriguing. They often feel like the type setting was done solely on the fonts that were available and because of that you get great combinations. This poster combines sans serif fonts with serif fonts and particularly appealing (to me at least!) is the font chosen for the heavy weight text in the middle of the poster where it says ‘Building Land, Cheslyn Hay’. The upper case A is particularly attractive.
There are a couple of holes where the poster has been folded and there is also some ghost text where a slightly wet version of the print has been laid in contact with this print. The graphic impact of posters like this one look great in modern interiors.
The poster has been stored folded and will be sent folded along the same lines. The crease lines can probably be removed with care.
