Brown Wall Tile
There is something very pleasing about the slightly concerning perspective in the design on this tile. It is a mix of resolutely 2D with an attempt at 3D that only highlights the 2D-ness of it!
Although it has no makers mark or backstamp I think it probably dates to the early years of the 20th Century and reflects the appetite for Chinoiserie. The Chinese style vase on the tile is sitting on a rudimentary bamboo table and is surrounded by a hybrid of European flora and maybe a stylised chrysanthemum.
There is a nick to the top right corner of the tile and a gouge to the bottom left, presumably incurred as the tile was prised off, or out of, a fire surround.
