Description
Blue & White Victorian Jug with Sprigged Decoration – Large
Sprigged decoration is a technique where clay is placed in shallow decorative moulds, it is then released from the mould and placed on a vessel so that the flat decorative element has texture and depth.
The influence of Wedgwood jasperware can be seen in the blue colour glaze and the contrast with white sprigged decoration. Whereas as jasperware has a matt appearance there is a slight sheen to the glaze here.
The manufacturer of the jug is not known. The sprigged decoration forms a hunting scene in the round.
In good conditon, one small chip to the underside of the spout and a firing crack at the base of the handle, otherwise in good condition.
