Kasmin’s Camera

This book would provide an excellent companion piece to Peter Schlesinger’s A Chequered Past. They both document the same period of time and the same cast of characters appear in both. While Sclesinger had his access to that world via being the partner of David Hockney in the late 1960s John Kasmin had access via being the gallerist that championed and supported this new wave of British artists.

His photographs were those of his social milieu and his travels. Travels and a social circle that included many of the most important figures in contemporary art of the time: Hockney, Caro, Hodgkin, Frank Stella and Barnett Newman.

These are photographs in which the subject is comfortable with John Kasmin’s presence, they are not studied or forced but relaxed and impromptu.
